Dear Santa, my name is Camille and I am nine years old. I live in Aix-en-Provence, France, where my grand-mère says in summer our whole region turns purple with lavender, though of course by Christmas it looks quite different.
Dear Camille, I have flown over that purple summer landscape myself, and I always look forward to seeing it again, even though December brings a rather different view.
Santa, I have three questions.
My first question is, do you like Christmas ribbon? My maman ties the most elaborate bows on every single gift and refuses to use tape as a shortcut, ever.
I have great respect for a properly tied bow, Camille, and your maman’s dedication to doing it the traditional way is admirable. Tape has its place, but a good ribbon bow shows real care.
My second question is about our region. My teacher says lavender fields are one of the most famous things about Provence. Is that true?
It is, Camille. Provence is world famous for its lavender fields, which bloom in vivid purple during summer, drawing visitors from all over. Even in winter, I always recognize the shape of those fields from the sleigh, quiet and waiting for their color to return.
My third question is about santons. My family collects tiny clay figurines every year to add to our nativity scene, not just the usual characters but a baker, a fisherman, all sorts of village people. Why so many figures?
Santons, meaning little saints, are a cherished Provençal tradition, Camille, tiny handcrafted clay figures representing not just the nativity but an entire village of everyday townsfolk gathered to welcome the newborn child. It is a beautiful reminder that the whole community, not just a few figures, is part of the story, and I always admire the careful artistry that goes into each one.
