Dear Santa, my name is Kalani and I am nine years old. I live in Palikir, in the Federated States of Micronesia, where my papa says our country has a special agreement with a much larger country far across the ocean.
Dear Kalani, your papa is entirely right, and I have real respect for that particular arrangement myself.
Santa, I have three questions.
My first question is, is there a Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town movie? My little brother watches holiday specials constantly, and I wanted to check if that one was real.
There is indeed a beloved holiday special with that title, Kalani, though I try to stay neutral about discussing its specific story too much myself. Your brother has excellent taste in festive television, regardless.
My second question is about our islands. My teacher says Micronesia is made up of hundreds of small Pacific islands. Is that true?
It is, Kalani. The Federated States of Micronesia includes hundreds of islands scattered across a vast stretch of the Pacific Ocean. Island-hopping across all of them by sleigh takes real dedication, though the scenery makes it worthwhile.
My third question is about the special agreement. My teacher says our country has a compact of free association with the United States. Is that true?
It is true, Kalani. Micronesia maintains a compact of free association with the United States, a unique arrangement allowing close cooperation while your country remains independently self-governing. I think it is a thoughtful example of two countries working together respectfully.
