Did Charles Dickens write about you in A Christmas Carol?
He did, in a manner of speaking. Dickens gave the world the Ghost of Christmas Present, a great booming, jolly figure crowned in holly, and many trace a good deal of my cheerful reputation back to that very character.
What river runs through Manchester?
The River Irwell runs through Manchester, past the old warehouses and newer glass towers alike, and its bridges lit up at night make for a fine, familiar landmark as the sleigh comes down toward the rooftops.
Why did Manchester become such an important industrial city in England?
Manchester grew rapidly in the 1700s and 1800s as one of the centers of the Industrial Revolution, especially for cotton and textile manufacturing, earning it the nickname Cottonopolis. That history shaped much of the city you see today, from its canals to its grand old mills, many of which now house shops, flats, and museums.
