Papai Noel: Do you come on Christmas Eve?

Larissa, age 7, asks Papai Noel do you come on Christmas Eve?, about Christ the Redeemer, and its meaning for Rio

Dear Papai Noel,

My name is Larissa and I am 7 years old. I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where it is so hot at Christmas that my family goes to the beach on Christmas morning right after opening presents.

First, do you come on Christmas Eve?

Second, a geography question: what famous statue overlooks Rio de Janeiro?

Third, a school question about my country: why is Christ the Redeemer such an important symbol for Rio?

I left you rabanada and iced tea.

Love, Larissa, age 7, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

From the Desk of Papai Noel

Dear Larissa, thank you for the treat, it was wonderful. Now, your questions.

Do you come on Christmas Eve?

Christmas Eve, arriving in the warm summer evening, often right around the time families head out for a late dinner or the beach.

What famous statue overlooks Rio de Janeiro?

The enormous statue of Christ the Redeemer stands atop Corcovado Mountain, arms outstretched over the whole city, and flying past it at night, lit up bright against the dark sky, is one of the most breathtaking sights on my entire route.

Why is Christ the Redeemer such an important symbol for Rio?

Completed in 1931, the statue was built to represent peace and Christianity watching protectively over Rio de Janeiro, and it quickly became one of the most recognized symbols of Brazil itself, later named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Feliz Natal, Larissa.

Ho ho ho, Papai Noel
