Dear Santa,
Hi Santa! My name is Sophia and I am 8 years old. I live in Providence, Rhode Island, in the smallest state in the whole country, right by the sea. I love sailing and reading by the window. My question is: why is Santa Claus named Santa Claus? My geography question is: what is the smallest state in the USA? And my social studies question is: what is religious freedom? Thanks, Santa!

Ho ho ho, hello Sophia! A reader and sailor in the smallest state asks a question with a sweet history. My name comes from the Dutch name Sinterklaas, which is simply their way of saying Saint Nicholas. When Dutch families settled in America long ago, English speakers heard the word Sinterklaas and slowly changed it into Santa Claus. So my name actually means Saint Nicholas, just wearing a new accent. Every single time you say Santa Claus, you are really saying the name of that kind old saint I grew from. Isn’t that lovely?
Your geography question: the smallest state
Your own Rhode Island is the smallest state in the entire United States. Even though it is tiny, it is packed with charm, with a long, winding coastline, sandy beaches, and a beautiful bay.
