Can I Make Santa Pancakes? II

Isaiah, age 8 from Winnipeg, Manitoba, asks Santa about making Santa pancakes, The Forks, and the area’s trading history.

Dear Santa, my name is Isaiah, and I am eight years old. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where my dad says two rivers meet right downtown at a spot called The Forks.

Dear Isaiah, a meeting point like The Forks makes for one of the easiest landmarks to spot on my entire route, your dad picked a truly well-connected hometown.

Santa, I have three questions.

Can I make Santa pancakes? My mom said we could try a special shape this year just for you.

I would love a plate of Santa shaped pancakes, Isaiah, syrup and all. Tell your mom that creative breakfast plans always earn extra Christmas cheer.

My dad says the Red River and the Assiniboine River meet right in the middle of our city. Is that true?

It is true, Isaiah, the Red and Assiniboine Rivers join right at The Forks, an important meeting point for centuries. I always follow that watery junction to help find my way to your rooftop.

My dad says The Forks has been an important gathering and trading spot for a very, very long time, even before the city existed. Is that true?

It is true, Isaiah, The Forks served as a gathering and trading place for Indigenous peoples and traders long before Winnipeg grew up around it. That kind of deep, layered history is really something worth appreciating.

Merry Christmas, Santa.

Your friend,
Isaiah Fontaine
Winnipeg, Manitoba

P.S. Will you draw a smiley face on your pancakes with syrup?

Every single one, Isaiah, breakfast deserves a bit of flair.
