Is Santa Hiring? II

Cillian, age 9 from Cork, Ireland, asks Santa about job openings, the River Lee, and Cork’s trading history.

Dear Santa, my name is Cillian, and I am nine years old. I live in Cork, Ireland, where my da says our whole county earned the nickname the Rebel County a long time ago.

Dear Cillian, a county with a nickname like that deserves a very spirited flyover, your da picked a truly feisty hometown.

Santa, I have three questions.

Is Santa hiring? My big sister wants a summer job at the workshop next year.

The workshop does occasionally welcome new helpers, Cillian, though the hours run rather unusual, mostly nights in December. Tell your sister enthusiasm and a love of wrapping paper go a long way in the application process.

My da says Cork sits along the River Lee. Is that true?

It is true, Cillian, the River Lee winds right through your city, splitting into two channels before rejoining near the harbor. I always follow that glimmering path to help find my way to your rooftop.

My da says Cork has always been known as an important trading and shipping city. Is that true?

It is true, Cillian, Cork’s harbor has served as an important center for trade and shipping for centuries. That kind of steady, hardworking history has shaped your city’s character in wonderful ways.

Merry Christmas, Santa.

Your friend,
Cillian Murphy
Cork, Ireland

P.S. Will you keep my sister’s application on file for next year?

Filed away carefully, Cillian, good help is always worth remembering.
