Is There an Elf Santa?

Mareta, age 8 from Alofi, Niue, asks Santa about elves taking his place, Niue’s coral island geography, and its self-governing status.

Dear Santa, my name is Mareta, and I am eight years old. I live in Alofi, Niue, where my nana says our whole capital might be one of the smallest in the entire world, with hardly any traffic at all.

Dear Mareta, a capital that peaceful and small is one of the easiest, friendliest landings on my entire Pacific route, your nana picked a truly cozy hometown.

Santa, I have three questions.

Is there an elf Santa? My little cousin thinks maybe one of the elves gets to be Santa sometimes when you are too tired.

My elves help with absolutely everything, Mareta, from building toys to keeping the workshop running smoothly, but the sleigh ride itself has always been my job alone. Tell your cousin the elves are far too busy wrapping presents to trade places with me.

My nana says Niue is one of the largest coral islands in the whole world. Is that true?

It is true, Mareta, Niue is recognized as one of the largest coral islands on Earth, rising up from the surrounding ocean. I always enjoy that dramatic, coral-edged coastline on my way to your rooftop.

My nana says Niue governs itself but is still closely connected to New Zealand. Is that true?

It is true, Mareta, Niue is self-governing in free association with New Zealand, making many of its own decisions while staying closely connected to a larger nation. That kind of thoughtful partnership, independence alongside support, is a lovely thing to witness.

Merry Christmas, Santa.

Your friend,
Mareta Talagi
Alofi, Niue

P.S. Will you tell my cousin the elves stay put on Christmas Eve?

Firmly put, Mareta, workshop duty waits for no one.
