Dear Santa, my name is Lina and I am nine years old. I live in Seiffen, Germany, where my opa says our whole village has been carving wooden toys for so long that it is basically the family business of the entire town.
Dear Lina, I have relied on your village’s craftsmanship for a very long time, and your opa’s description is not exaggerating in the slightest.
Santa, I have three questions.
My first question is, do you like Christmas nutcrackers? My onkel carves them by hand in his workshop, and I always think mine looks a little braver than the ones in shops.
I love them, Lina, and a handcarved nutcracker with real character, brave expression included, means considerably more than a mass-produced one. Your onkel’s craftsmanship sounds genuinely special.
My second question is about our mountains. My teacher says our village sits in a region famous for woodcarving for hundreds of years. Is that true about the Ore Mountains?
It is true, Lina. The Ore Mountains region has been a center of fine woodcarving and toy-making since the 1800s, when local miners began carving in the off-season, eventually developing the detailed craft your village is famous for today. Flying over that historic, skillful region each December fills me with genuine admiration.
My third question is, why did nutcrackers specifically become such an important part of German Christmas tradition, more than other kinds of carved toys?
Nutcracker figures became especially beloved in German folk tradition partly through old folklore about them bringing good luck and protection to a household, and their bold, soldierly design made them particularly popular as decorative gifts. I think it is a wonderful thing when a small, carved figure can carry both a practical purpose and centuries of story behind it.
