A Letter to Santa from Singapore
Dear Santa,
Hello Santa! My name is Wei and I am 9 years old. I live in Singapore, a tiny but shiny country with towering buildings and gardens in the sky. I love reading and building robots. The other day my father said the words Santa Claus rally, and I got so excited because I thought it was a parade for you! What does it really mean? My geography question is: what is a city-state? And my social studies question is: why are ports so important to a country? Xie xie, Santa!

Ho ho ho, hello Wei! I do wish a Santa Claus rally were a parade in my honor, what fun that would be! But your father meant something different. A Santa Claus rally is a phrase grown-ups use about the stock market, the place where people buy and sell small shares of companies. It describes how, in the last few days of December and into the new year, the prices of those shares often rise a little. Nobody is quite sure why, but folks cheerfully named that small rise after me, perhaps because of all the holiday good feeling. So it is a money word that borrowed my jolly name.
Your geography question: what is a city-state
A city-state is a country that is made up of just one city and the land right around it. Your own Singapore is one of the few city-states in the world today. A port is a place where ships load and unload goods, and ports are very important because most of the world’s trade travels by sea.
