Isabela, age 9, asks Papai Noel do Brazilian children leave their shoes out for you?, about Christ the Redeemer, and its meaning for Rio
Dear Papai Noel,
My name is Isabela and I am 9 years old. I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where it is so hot at Christmas that my family goes to the beach on Christmas morning right after opening presents.
First, do Brazilian children leave their shoes out for you?
Second, a geography question: what famous statue overlooks Rio de Janeiro?
Third, a school question about my country: why is Christ the Redeemer such an important symbol for Rio?
I left you rabanada, Brazilian-style French toast, and a cold glass of guarana soda.
Love, Isabela, age 9, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
From the Desk of Papai Noel
Dear Isabela, thank you for the treat, it was wonderful. Now, your questions.
Do Brazilian children leave their shoes out for you?
Some do, alongside the more common stocking, a lovely little variation on the tradition found in different corners of Brazil.
What famous statue overlooks Rio de Janeiro?
The enormous statue of Christ the Redeemer stands atop Corcovado Mountain, arms outstretched over the whole city, and flying past it at night, lit up bright against the dark sky, is one of the most breathtaking sights on my entire route.
Why is Christ the Redeemer such an important symbol for Rio?
Completed in 1931, the statue was built to represent peace and Christianity watching protectively over Rio de Janeiro, and it quickly became one of the most recognized symbols of Brazil itself, later named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Feliz Natal, Isabela.
Ho ho ho, Papai Noel
