Papai Noel: Do you come from Greenland instead of the North Pole?

Miguel, age 8, asks Papai Noel do you come from Greenland instead of the North Pole?, about Christ the Redeemer, and its meaning for Rio

Dear Papai Noel,

My name is Miguel and I am 8 years old. I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where it is so hot at Christmas that my family goes to the beach on Christmas morning right after opening presents.

First, do you come from Greenland instead of the North Pole?

Second, a geography question: what famous statue overlooks Rio de Janeiro?

Third, a school question about my country: why is Christ the Redeemer such an important symbol for Rio?

I left you a slice of panettone and guarana soda.

Love, Miguel, age 8, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

From the Desk of Papai Noel

Dear Miguel, thank you for the treat, it was wonderful. Now, your questions.

Do you come from Greenland instead of the North Pole?

The North Pole remains my official home, though a few playful Brazilian stories have imagined me arriving from Greenland instead, which I find rather charming.

What famous statue overlooks Rio de Janeiro?

The enormous statue of Christ the Redeemer stands atop Corcovado Mountain, arms outstretched over the whole city, and flying past it at night, lit up bright against the dark sky, is one of the most breathtaking sights on my entire route.

Why is Christ the Redeemer such an important symbol for Rio?

Completed in 1931, the statue was built to represent peace and Christianity watching protectively over Rio de Janeiro, and it quickly became one of the most recognized symbols of Brazil itself, later named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Feliz Natal, Miguel.

Ho ho ho, Papai Noel
