Dear Santa,
Hi Santa! My name is Owen and I am 8 years old. I live in Boston, Massachusetts, an old city full of redbrick streets and history around every corner. I love baseball and reading about the past. My question is: what is Santa Claus’s birthday? My geography question is: what is New England? And my social studies question is: what happened at the Boston Tea Party? Thanks, Santa!

Ho ho ho, hello Owen! A baseball fan who loves history is sure to enjoy this answer. I do not have one single birthday the way you do. The day most closely tied to me is the sixth of December, which is Saint Nicholas Day, in honor of the kind saint I grew from. But the cheerful Santa Claus you picture today took shape slowly over many centuries, so I am both very, very old and happily ageless. I simply feel jolly all year round, and that is a fine way for an old fellow to be.

New England is the name for the northeastern corner of your own United States, made up of six states, including your Massachusetts. It is famous for its colorful autumn leaves, rocky coasts, cozy towns, and long history. The region got its name from early settlers who arrived from England long ago.
